State report card
Virginia rates schools two ways. Accreditation means a school “submitted all required evidence to the Department of Education as prescribed in the Standards of Accreditation,” in the words of the state profile. The School Performance and Support Framework gives each school a score and one of four performance levels: Distinguished, Meets Expectations, Approaching Expectations and Needs Intensive Support.
- Accreditation: Fully Accredited, the state’s designation for the 2025-26 school year.
- Framework score: 79.55, performance level Approaching Expectations, in the state’s division summary.
- Federal accountability: the profile lists Mayfield as “Identified for Targeted Support and Improvement” based on 2025-26 data, a label tied to the results of individual student groups.
Standards of Learning pass rates (share of tested students who passed, all tests in the subject):
| Subject | 2023-24 | 2024-25 | 2025-26 | Virginia, 2025-26 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English reading | 61% | 59% | 57% | 74% |
| Math | 60% | 68% | 63% | 73% |
| Science (fifth grade) | 54% | 57% | 50% | 69% |
The full profile breaks the results down by grade and student group and also reports attendance and teacher data.
Attendance zone and feeder schools
The intermediate school depends on the home address, not on the elementary school alone. In addresses we checked in the division’s WebQuery lookup on Oct. 20, homes zoned for Jennie Dean, Richard C. Haydon and Weems elementaries were all assigned to Mayfield, while the Baldwin Elementary and George Carr Round Elementary zones were split between Mayfield and Baldwin Intermediate. Enter your own address and choose grade 05 to see the assignment.
After sixth grade, every city student goes to Grace E. Metz Middle and then Osbourn High. The zone stops at the city line; many homes with a Manassas mailing address are in Prince William County, which runs its own schools.

Inside the school
The school’s about page says most students learn in teams, with 90 minutes each of language arts and math and 45 minutes each of science and social studies. Students are not grouped by ability, though two gifted and talented clusters serve identified students. The two-story building, which opened in 2006, puts fifth grade in one wing and sixth grade in the other, with 48 classrooms in all. The school runs intramurals and after-school clubs, and the division says band, orchestra and guitar start in fifth grade.
