Restaurants in Manassas are inspected by the Prince William Health District, part of the Virginia Department of Health, which also covers Manassas Park and Prince William County. Virginia does not give restaurants a numeric score or a letter grade. Each inspection report instead lists the violations the inspector found, by type, with the inspector’s comments. To look up any restaurant, use the Prince William inspections portal. Complaints: Environmental Health, 703-792-6310, option 1.

What this means for you

  • No grade card is posted on the door in Virginia. Read the report itself.
  • One report is one visit. It describes conditions on that day only.
  • To complain about a restaurant, call 703-792-6310 (option 1), 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business days. If you think a meal made you sick, you can also file a report with the state’s My Meal Detective.

How to read a Virginia inspection report

The FDA Food Code, which the Virginia Food Regulations follow, sorts violations into three levels, and Virginia reports use the same terms:

  • Priority: items that directly reduce or eliminate a hazard, such as cooking or holding temperatures and handwashing.
  • Priority foundation: items that support priority items, such as having a working thermometer or soap at the sink.
  • Core: general sanitation and maintenance, such as clean floors or labeled containers.

Each report also gives the purpose of the visit:

  • Routine: a regular, unannounced inspection. How often a place is inspected depends on its menu and how much raw food it prepares, the district says.
  • Follow-up: a return visit to check items from an earlier inspection.
  • Pre-opening: the inspection before a new food business opens.

A follow-up visit or a violation on a report is not a closure.
