No right turn from westbound Centreville Road to Sudley Road while the roundabout is built, plus daily lane closures. City projects, Route 28 plans and 511.
Last checked Oct. 29, 2026. This page is refreshed weekly. Facts come from the City of Manassas Transportation Projects, Traffic Advisories and Lane Closures, Sudley Road/Centreville Road Roundabout and street paving pages, and VDOT’s Route 28 widening study.
The biggest job on Manassas roads this fall is the new roundabout at Sudley Road, Centreville Road and Prescott Avenue, the gateway to downtown from the north. Expect daily lane closures there. The city maintains its own streets, about 250 lane miles, so most closures inside the city are announced by the city, not VDOT. For interstates and state routes around Manassas, check Virginia 511 or dial 511.

Sudley Road and Centreville Road roundabout
The city is replacing the signalized intersection of Centreville Road (Route 28), Sudley Road and Prescott Avenue with a two-lane roundabout with raised medians, connected sidewalks and pedestrian refuge islands. The $5.07 million project is paid for with Northern Virginia Transportation Authority regional money and local funds.
Traffic changes now in place, from the city’s Oct. 15 project update:
- A Phase 2 detour that began Sept. 14 bans all right turns from westbound Centreville Road to northbound Sudley Road.
- Daily single-lane closure on southbound Centreville Road.
- Right-lane closures on northbound Centreville Road, northbound Prescott Avenue and northbound Sudley Road.
- A ramp closure with flaggers from northbound Prescott Avenue to eastbound Centreville Road; Prescott keeps two through lanes open.
Work through Oct. 31 includes curb, gutter and storm drains in the northwest corner, electrical conduit near Ryan’s Furniture, light pole foundations in the Walgreens parking lot and a 24-inch storm pipe crossing Centreville Road. The city sends a monthly update; the November update had not been posted when this page was checked Oct. 29. The city expects the roundabout to be finished in summer 2027. Other city projects
| Project | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Main Street traffic calming | Main Street, Wellington Road to Prince William Street | Phase 1 (beacons, crossings, radar speed signs) finished; burying power lines between Bartow Street and Azure Court was planned for fall 2026, and the city has not posted a start date; repaving and bike lanes later |
| Grant Avenue Phase 2 | Prince William Street to Lee Avenue, downtown | In design; right-of-way purchases from summer 2026; construction to begin fall 2027 |
| Liberia Avenue third lane | Eastbound, Route 28 to Euclid Avenue | Design; $8.9 million with regional funds for FY 2026 and 2027 |
| Mathis Avenue streetscape | Sudley Road to Liberia Avenue | Design |
| Dean Drive water main | Near the SERVE Family Shelter | Through-traffic closure for a new 36-inch water main was scheduled July 15 to Oct. 15. The city’s closures page still lists it and has not said whether the road has reopened; if it is still closed, reach Dean Drive from Route 28 (Nokesville Road), not Wellington Road |
| Sudley Road bike lanes, Nokesville Road trail, Jackson Avenue and Centreville Road sidewalks | Various | Conceptual design |
Grant Avenue Phase 2 will add bike lanes from Prince William Street to Center Street, wider sidewalks to Lee Avenue and new pedestrian signals at Center and Church streets, without changing the travel lanes. Questions go to John Keenan, senior engineer, at 703-257-8447.
The city’s lane closures page had not been brought up to date when this page was checked Oct. 29: most items on it carry summer end dates and no year, so call the Street Department before relying on it. The city also keeps moving lane closures citywide for sewer line cleaning, curb and inlet repairs, pothole patching and pavement markings. Planned paving is in the city’s FY 2027 paving plan.
VDOT projects around Manassas
- Route 28 widening study. VDOT is studying widening Route 28 (Centreville Road) from Liberia Avenue in Manassas to just south of Compton Road in Fairfax County, from four undivided lanes to six divided lanes with a sidewalk and a shared-use path, and replacing or widening the bridge over Bull Run. A public meeting on preliminary alternatives is planned for spring 2027.
- Route 28 innovative intersections. North of the city, in Manassas Park and Prince William County, VDOT plans restricted-crossing U-turns at Maplewood Drive and Browns Lane and a median U-turn between Birch Street and Spruce Street, plus new medians and sidewalks. The design public hearing was in February 2025. See the project page.
Route 28 carries about 49,000 vehicles a day in that stretch, VDOT says.
